Air in Salzburg hardly polluted
environment
For five years, the pollutants have been decreasing and the quality of the air in all districts of Salzburg has been improving. According to experts, this also has something to do with the volume of traffic and the greatly improved technology in combustion engines.
Although the traffic on Salzburg’s streets has become significantly heavier again since the second year with lockdowns, the air quality is measurably better.
Latest burner technology very clean
Experts in the country also attribute this to the combustion engines, which have been heavily modernized since the diesel scandal. Alexander Kranabetter is head of the state’s immission control department: “It keeps getting better. In recent years, we still had problems with nitrogen oxides, where the limit values were significantly exceeded in some places. The cars are now much cleaner. We can also see that in our measurement data.”
Also fine dust less and less
The values are evaluated around the clock in the state’s air quality measurement network. These are 13 permanent and three mobile measuring stations. With all long-standing problem exhaust gases, the trend is clearly downwards, says Kranabetter: “The main source of nitrogen oxides is road traffic. When it comes to particulate matter, domestic fuel and long-distance transport of Saharan dust play a major role.”
For example, the limit values for nitrogen dioxide were practically consistently undercut across the country in the previous year. The expert dares to predict that these readings will continue to fall until 2030. This is also in line with the expectations of the Federal Environment Agency, according to Kranabetter.
