Air France celebrates 85 years Geneva-Paris
This year Air France celebrates the 85th anniversary of its Geneva-Paris route. Since May 15, 1937, the French airline has linked the second largest city in Switzerland with Paris. Air France currently offers up to nine daily flights from Geneva to the French capital, depending on the day of operation, with an Airbus 318 or 320.
“Celebrating 85 years of ties with Geneva means a lot to Air France, because our airline has invested in the region from the very beginning – most recently, for example, in the renovated Air France lounge and in the new office space right in front of the airport. We are proud to be able to resume offering up to nine daily flights to efficiently connect business and leisure travelers to the world via our Paris hub. In Geneva we want to continue to strengthen our presence while reducing our ecological footprint through our SAF and CO2 program as well as through voluntary contributions», says Eudes-Philippe Le Guelinel, Country Sales Manager Air France-KLM Switzerland.
85 years of Air France in Geneva
The Geneva-Paris route has a long history: In May 1932, Air Union opened the first non-stop connection between Paris and Geneva and served it three times until 1935. Air France then introduced a service between Geneva and Lyon before resuming non-stop services between Paris and Geneva on May 15, 1937. During the Second World War the connection was discontinued. In July 1945, Air France resumed service. From 1946, the route was served daily, analogous to Paris-Zurich. In April 1953 there were around 14 weekly flights between Le Bourget and Geneva. At the end of 1959, the “Caravelle” was replaced by the Vicker “Viscount”, and the second largest city in Switzerland was only 40 minutes away from Paris. Faced with increasing success, Air France began operating a Boeing 707 in early 1968. The aircraft could carry 142 passengers at a cruising speed of 900 km/h.
Summer 2022: Geneva-Paris up to nine times a day
Today Air France offers up to nine daily connections between Paris and Geneva. Depending on the day of operation, an Airbus 318 or an Airbus 230 is used. This gives air travelers from Geneva a regular connection to Air France’s worldwide flight network. This summer season corresponds to the flight program on average 90 percent of the capacities of 2019. The frequencies for destinations in North America, Africa, the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean are even higher than before the crisis. Air France has added connections from Paris-Charles de Gaulle to Québec (Canada), Zakynthos (Greece) and Tirana (Albania). From Geneva, Air France will be flying once a week direct to Biarritz this summer: the seasonal flight will be offered again in July and August 2022.
