Znaim celebrates shutout over Salzburg
In the game that was decisive for them in terms of the course of the championship, the Salzburg Ducks delivered their weakest performance of the season in Znojmo and affected the Knights in a deserved way 0:17.
The first drives of the two opponents were quickly stopped. Above all, the offense of the guests faltered from the start, as in previous games.
That was the beginning of the second quarter Corry Jones (BEAT Oldrich Helebrant) the Knights die with 7-0 brought into the lead.
Salzburg’s response: A long drive that took them into the hosts’ end zone. There was a short pass from Kris Denton however intercepted. The Ducks quarterback had little time to throw, the O-Line was brittle and his running attempts were also always quickly stopped. The first half ended after just 50 minutes with the Czechs taking a narrow but probably deserved lead.
Ducks D keeps the game open
The Knights started their offensive in the third quarter, which was initially of little use. The Ducks may not have an explosive offense, but their defense has always kept them in the game. Same here when they were able to conquer a forced fumble.
But Salzburg’s offense didn’t know what to do with the ball either and produced a 3 & Out in their own half of the game. On the other side, Helebrant scored a field goal 10:0. Overview of the course of the game until then, it looks like a preliminary decision. Especially when the Ducks’ offense stayed cold in the drive afterwards.
The last quarter
Characterized by mistakes on the offense on both sides, the Ducks then undermined the decisive one. A quick pick six of Alexander Borkovic executed shortly thereafter 17:0 after a touchdown by RB Henry Douglas (BEAT Oldrich Helebrant).
After another collapse of the line and a fumble by Denton deep in his own territory, things almost got worse, but the Ducks defense was again reliable. The final score of 17:0 looks alright. Salzburg (along with Innsbruck) slowly slipped out of the playoff race with four wins to fourth place with five games to play.
votes on the game
Martin Kocian, Head Coach Znojmo Knights: “We are very happy about this victory. In the last few weeks we have repeatedly had difficulties, today everything came together.”
Nicholas Johansen, Salzburg Ducks head coach: “The Knights are a very well coached team, have one of the best defensive lines in the league and their quarterback gave us a few problems. We just didn’t manage to get into the end zone today.”
