St. Gallen or Lugano? – Whoever wins will say: finally! – Sports

The 2022 cup final is the starving cup final. If you add up the time of waiting, you get 82 years.
In the cup final on Sunday, Lugano and St. Gallen have the chance to finally lift the cup bucket again. Whoever can be celebrated in the confetti rain in Wankdorf at the end will end a long time of waiting. No other current Super League club has not been a cup winner for so long as the Ticino and the eastern Swiss.
Lugano last won the cup in 1993. Since then, 29 untitled years have passed. St. Gallen is waiting even longer than the people of Ticino. The Eastern Swiss have won the Cup in 1969 for the only time so far. They have not remained untitled since then. The Espen were crowned Swiss champions in the 1999/2000 season. In the cup, however, St. Gallen has had to wait 53 long years.
Spare yourself – and lose?
On the way to the cup final, St. Gallen has so far avoided the Super League clubs. In the first two rounds, there were lower-class opponents (Münsingen and Chênois from the 1st league) due to the regulations. In the round of 16, St. Gallen could have met a Super League club for the first time. But from there, the loose Chiasso, Etoile Carouge (both from the Promotion League) and finally, as a tough nut, the Challenge League newcomer Yverdon were drawn.
Now only the Luganesi can deny the St. Gallen the long-awaited triumph. Rested Luganesi. Coach Mattia Croci-Torti saved a number of players the trip to the away game in Geneva (2-2) on Wednesday. Was that a good idea?
We remember: Before last year’s cup final, St. Gallen also played away against Servette in the championship. Coach Peter Zeidler didn’t want to subject his best players to the arduous journey by plane from Zurich or twice 360 kilometers by car so close to the most important game of the season.
To put it bluntly, he sent a B team to Geneva. The youth team won 2:1 – a sensation in a sportingly insignificant game. Three days later, the rested lost the cup final against Lucerne 1:3.
