Slovaks will feel warming this summer
Temperatures of 30 ° C and more were on Thursday, especially in the Danubian Lowland and the Yugoslav Basin. They measured a value of 31.4 ° C in Hurbanov, 31.2 ° C in Mužli and 30.3 ° C in Žihárci. “However, it was also very warm, where even in the mountain areas below the Tatras the temperature rose to 25 ° C, for example in Tatranská Lomnica,” SHMÚ meteorologists stated.
Meteorologists were not surprised by tropical temperatures. In the past, the 1930s came to Slovakia in May, but also in April. The last time was in 2018, when they measured 30.1 ° C in Holíč on April 29. “So far, in the history of SHMÚ observations, we have recorded such a day in April only in 1962, 1968, 2000, 2012 and 2013,” said SHMÚ. The warmest day of April was 30 April 2012 in Gabčíkovo, when meteorologists recorded 31.8 ° C.
Scientists said this week that the planet as a whole is warming faster than they expected. The United Nations (UN) warns that by 2027, the Earth could warm by more than 1.5 ° C compared to the pre-industrial era. “The overall warming of 1.5 ° C compared to the end of the 19th century represents a very new change for the planetary climate system, especially if you are planning a period of less than 150 years,” recorded meteorologist and climatologist Jozef Pecho.
In the Paris Climate Change Agreement of 2015, the country committed itself to keeping global warming below two degrees Celsius, or at least 1.5 degrees compared to the 1850-1900 adjustment. “The value of 1.5 degrees Celsius was not chosen at random. It is an indicator of the point at which the effects of climate change are being significantly harmful to humanity and the world as a whole. ” The head of the UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Petteri Taalas, warned. In 2021, the average temperature was 1.11 degrees Celsius higher than pre-industrial levels. The 1.5 limit is therefore closer than it seems.
WMO says that the probability of global warming of 1.5 degrees today is 48 percent, and this figure is still estimated. “This chance is already higher than, for example, in the period 2017-2021, when it was at the level of 10 percent,” Pecho explained. According to him, we will not work towards a breakthrough warming of 1.5 degrees after 2030.

The bad news is that Slovakia is one of the countries that is feeling more affected by climate change. The average annual temperature in our country is rising about twice as fast as at the global level. Since the middle of the last century, the average annual air temperature in Slovakia has been used by about 2 ° C.
“Over the next 10 to 20 years, which will be the period when we will reach 1.5 ° C globally, we expect the air temperature in Slovakia to” jump “by another 1 to 1.5 ° C. It will understand in particular the most extreme nature and weather, the greater and greater impacts due to the more extreme drought, mainly due to torrential rains and storms, and the adverse effects of high temperatures on the health of the population, especially in summer. The summers will be on average more than 2 degrees warmer, which will also increase the probability that the highest air temperature measured in Slovakia (40.3 ° C – 20 July 2007) will be exceeded, ” Pecho assumes.
