The circumstances of the death are still under investigation by local authorities at Westville Jail in Durban. Former banker, who was made on December 11 of last year in that country after having fled from Portugal not serving time in the BPP process, found himself imprisoned there for six months and opposed the request for editing. He was in an 80 square meter cell with about 50 inmates.
On December 17, Rendeiro saw it as the most serious coercive measure and was held in pre-trial detention at the Westville prison.
The former banker was convicted in different cases related to the BPP court, three as evidence that he withdrew 1,361 million euros from the bank. Of the three convictions, only one has become final and does not admit any further appeals, with João Rendeiro having to serve a prison sentence of five years and eight months.
João Rendeiro was also sentenced to 10 years in prison in a second case and another three years and six months in a third case, and these two sentences have not yet become final.
