Advancing gender equality and combating stereotypes
A meeting of the Council of Europe’s main body responsible for supporting gender equality discussed a wide range of women’s issues. The plenary meeting of the Committee for Equality between Women and Men, which took place from 11 to 13 May in Strasbourg, discussed the progress made in promoting equality between women and men in Europe . Participants exchanged views with Ukrainian prosecuting authorities and an NGO on the impact of the war in Ukraine on women.
Conference participants also reviewed the implementation of the Council of Europe’s strategy for equality between women and men in areas such as preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, guaranteeing women’s equal access to justice, achieving a balanced participation of women and men in decision-making, as well as ensuring and protecting the rights of migrant, refugee and asylum-seeking women and girls.
One of the main objectives of the strategy for equality between women and men is to prevent and combat sexist stereotypes and sexism. The Council of Europe actively pursues this objective, in particular through its projects in member states. Participants viewed videos produced by the Council of Europe Office in Georgia within the framework of the project to combat violence against women and promote gender equality in Georgia. The videos showed women working in various professions, including writer, pilot, military master sergeant and marine engineer.
