San Marino celebrates the international day of the nurse
“Today, 12 May, International Nurse Day is celebrated all over the world, with the aim of raising public awareness of the importance of this figure in world health care”.
A press release reports it. “The date chosen for this anniversary is not accidental: it is a day in honor of Florence Nightingale, a British nurse known as“ the lady with the lantern ”, considered the mother of modern nursing, born on 12 May 1820 in Florence.
Only in recent years, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the figure of the nurse has seen important professional merits recognized, teaching us to appreciate even more their important contribution both within the hospital and in the area. An importance also marked by the slogan chosen by the San Marino Nursing Association to celebrate this year’s anniversary: “The nurse is future”.
An importance also confirmed by politics and which saw this morning, in the press conference convened within the State Hospital, the Secretary of State for Health Roberto Ciavatta together with the Secretary of State for Justice and the Family Massimo Andrea Ugolini announce the legal recognition of the Order of Nurses and Pediatric Nurses.
“A late achievement – said Ciavatta in his speech – which celebrates and qualifies the fundamental figure for the functioning of the San Marino health system. The establishment of the Order is not a prize, but a duty, deontological before. But not only that, it allows nurses who can arrive in San Marino to take advantage of many training opportunities in Italy that were currently closed, thus increasing their skills and allowing, once mutual recognition has been obtained, our professionals to be able to practice also in Italy”.
“Nurses, as removed by the Director General of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyes – continued Ciavatta – are the backbone of any health system. With more nurses operating in hospital wards, in fact, assistance improves and there is a 7% drop in the possibility of patient death and re-admission to hospital after a previous hospitalization. This was demonstrated by a large study published in The Lancet. This day is an opportunity to thank, once more, all the staff of the Social Security Institute of the State Hospital of the Republic of San Marino for the profuse commitment of these months “.
We finally concluded by recalling how “The commitment of this government in enhancing this profession is evident in the acts carried out, starting with the stabilization of the professional figures within the ISS in the years 2020 and 2021 as well as the numerous meetings with the University of San Marino and the nearby Italian universities to create new training courses in the Republic and to recruit new resources for our health system “.
The Secretary of State for Justice Massimo Andrea Ugolini then took the floor: “I join my colleague Ciavatta in my thanks and gratitude for all the work done by nurses in our State Hospital, especially in recent years. The process that will lead to the recognition of the Order will be completed in the following weeks with the relative resolution to update the law 28 of 191 on the profession. The draft of the statute is in the phase of formal adjustments and the code of ethics has already been prepared with the support of the San Marino Bioethics Committee. The recognition of the Order is part of a broader project to update the orders of the health professions with the intention of also creating all those structures – which have been present in Italy for years – also for other professions such as pharmacists, midwives, veterinarians and the other technical professions “.
Finally, Andrea Ugolini, Vice President of the San Marino Nursing Association, took over, thanking the Government for “having taken care of our requests from the very first word, understanding their fundamental importance. I also thank the work of the lawyers Bonelli and Selva, as well as the Special Secretary of Health Christian Ferrari ”.
