Malta will host the 2022 Rugby Europe 7s Conference 2 in June
The Malta Rugby Football Union will play the Rugby Europe 7s Conference 2 competition in June, with Malta facing five countries in their quest for promotion on the Rugby Europe ladder.
In a statement, MRFU announced that Rugby Europe 7s Conference 2 will be held at Hibernians Stadium on 11 and 12 June.
Malta will face Slovenia, Slovakia, Kosovo, San Marino, and Estonia as they seek promotion to Rugby Europe Conference 1 – the third tier of European rugby.
Each of the teams will play against each other in a robin round, before then moving on to a play-off structure that determines which country will get promotion.
This is the first time that Malta will host a Rugby Europe tournament of this stature.
The MRFU said the tournament will “present the perfect opportunity for sports enthusiasts to whet their appetite for the 2023 GSSE Small Nations Games, where rugby 7s will be one of the sports show. “
“The opportunity to host such an event is a big step for Maltese rugby, not only in recognition of our national teams and their performance, but also to reaffirm our position as a host nation for international events, Said George Zammit. Montebello, Acting President of MRFU.
“Being able to organize such an event is also a victory for the volunteers who make these events possible with their behind-the-scenes work. We hope this will be the first of many events held in Malta in collaboration with Rugby Europe, ”added Zammit Montebello.
MRFU said it was looking for corporate partners to help make this event possible, and that those interested should email Rhona Xerri on [email protected]
The MRFU thanked Sport Malta and the Maltese Olympic Committee for their support in saying that it would allow the union to take on such major events.
