International – Munich – Bavaria relies on green hydrogen from South Africa – Bavaria at the turn
Munich (dpa/lby) – When looking for new energy suppliers, Bavaria is also looking to cooperate with South Africa. Bavaria’s Minister of State for European and International Affairs, Melanie Huml (CSU), therefore wants to travel to the Western Cape province there, the State Chancellery announced on Wednesday in Munich. Western Cape is one of six Bavarian partner regions. Huml: “We have a long and friendly partnership at eye level. Above all, we want to start our cooperation in the use of green hydrogen.”
As part of the energy transition, the state government is currently developing a portfolio of states from which the Free State can obtain energy in the future – Minister of Economics Hubert Aiwanger, for example, wants to travel to Scotland and Norway for this purpose, Prime Minister Markus Söder had to travel to the Gulf States before Easter due to a corona infection can be canceled at short notice.
Discussions are planned with government representatives, educational institutions and social institutions. The highlight of the trip was a meeting with Prime Minister Alan Winde and five ministers from his cabinet, it said. Western Cape has great potential for the use of renewable energies. There are sufficient wind, sun and hydroelectric power – the best conditions for the production and export of hydrogen.
South Africa is the only African G20 member and the third strongest African business location. The partnership between Bavaria and the province of Western Cape has existed since 1995. The focal points of the cooperation are internal security and vocational training. But also business and research, high-tech and universities, agriculture or renewable energies are areas of cooperation.
