Social and environmental sustainability: the publishing house wetlands is born in Venice
A new publishing house debuts in the bookstore at the end of May, wetlandsa new editorial project dedicated to the themes of social sustainability And environmental and the challenges ofAnthropocene. The editorial proposal – as the presentation underlines – “moves in the territories of intersection between fiction and non-fictionpromoting texts that touch on environmental, urban, social, anthropological and cultural themes “.
wetlands is a non-profit social enterprise, which “is inspired by the principles of equality, participation, enhancement of diversity, respect for the environment, cultural pluralism”. It is a project with zero emissions it’s at local supply chain: all the books are composed, produced and printed in Venice, by local labor, on eco-sustainable paper, and the covers are printed in seaweed paper.
There city of Venicea metaphor for problems and solutions of global significance, it is at the center of wetlands’ planning, “which intertwines international perspectives with ideas generated in the city, great authors and new names between narration and research”.
The selected authors are mainly international. Among those planned for the two-year period 2022-2023 we find Frank Westerman, Régis Debray, Tash Aw, Isham Matar, Robert Davis, Claire Judde de Lariviere, Giandomenico Romanelli, Costanza Jesurum and other.
The editorial plan includes 15 texts to be released between 2022 and 2023, and then about 10 new titles per year for the following years.
There are three necklaces: Mudowhich hosts “books mainly by foreign authors, which relate Venice to other places / realities in the world”; Foundations, with “books that talk about the city of Venice, its history and its environment, from always original perspectives”; And Sandbankswith texts by Environmental Humanities (in collaboration with the University of Ca ‘Foscari).
The first three releases are The Toy of the World – Venice in the age of hyper tourism by Robert C. Davis, D.ichtico Idraulico – Venice, Vajont and The smile of the salmon by Frank Westerman e Against Venice by Régis Debray (with a text by Gianni Montieri).
