After two suspected racing accidents in Cologne-Poll and on the Autobahn 555 near Bornheim, police officers confiscated the driving licenses of a 24-year-old Porsche driver and a 20-year-old Mercedes driver within 24 hours on Monday (May 9) and against both investigations initiated on suspicion of a prohibited motor vehicle race. The officers seized the 24-year-old’s 520 hp sports car, the Mercedes driver’s E-Class and the men’s mobile phones.
In a traffic accident on the A 555 on Monday evening (May 9), the 20-year-old Mercedes driver suffered serious injuries, as did his two passengers (18, 19) and a golf driver involved (32). According to current knowledge, the 20-year-old is said to have driven over the hard shoulder at around 6 p.m. at excessive speed. When he cut into the lane, he then collided with the VW Golf, which was also traveling in the direction of Bonn. The collision sent the 32-year-old’s car crashing into a crash barrier.
All drivers involved in a racing accident at the Cologne-Poll junction early Tuesday morning (May 10) were uninjured.
According to testimonies, the 24-year-old from Cologne continued to accelerate around 3 a.m. in the exit of the Poll junction and drove at significantly excessive speed in the direction of Rolshover Straße. In the curve of the motorway exit, however, the man came off the road while practicing his “driving skills” and crashed into an Audi (driver: 49) standing at the traffic lights in the Rolshover Straße area.
Note from the Cologne police:
Individual drivers who do not compete directly with other competitors can also be penalized as participants in an illegal motor vehicle race if they move at an inappropriate speed and in a grossly illegal and reckless manner in order to achieve the highest possible speed. (al/rr)
