Borussia Dortmund is very active on the transfer market early on. After Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck, Karim Adeyemi is the third DFB player to sign with the runners-up. The 20-year-old should not replace Erling Haaland, who is migrating to England. BVB is facing a major upheaval.
Borussia Dortmund has struck again on the transfer market and continues to tinker with the ball game club Borussia Germany. With national striker Karim Adeyemi from RB Salzburg, the runners-up in the Bundesliga season that ends on Saturday has signed the third DFB player. The Bundesliga club announced the transfer shortly after superstar Erling Haaland’s move to Manchester City was announced. A sum of between 30 and 40 million euros is under discussion as a transfer fee. The 20-year-old striker comes with the recommendation of 23 goals in 42 competitive games for Salzburg this season and has signed a contract that is valid until June 30, 2027.
“Karim Adeyemi is a highly talented, young German national player whose strength at the end of our offensive game will be just as good as his extreme pace,” said BVB sporting director Michael Zorc. “Following the transfers of Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck, we’ve got another very exciting player in Karim Adeyemi for the coming season,” added Sebastian Kehl, who will be sporting director at BVB from next season. “His speed and goal scoring skills are impressive and although Karim is already very far in terms of football and athletics at just 20 years old, we see enormous potential in him.”
Adeyemi himself emphasized that as a young boy he was “fascinated by black and yellow fast-paced football”. “I deliberately signed for the long term because I’m convinced that we’ll be an exciting team that, with the support of the fantastic Dortmund fans, will be able to play for titles and win them in the medium term,” said the Attacker.
National defenders Niklas Süle from Bayern Munich and Nico Schlotterbeck from SC Freiburg had previously been transferred to the Westfalenstadion. Like Adeyemi, Freiburg’s Schlotterbeck has also been linked with Bayern Munich. It is not known how far the talks between the players and the record champions had progressed.
Via Unterhaching to Austria
Adeyemi made his debut for the German national team in a 6-0 win against Armenia in September 2021. followed by two more appearances in DFB dress. Born in Munich, he played as a striker in all youth national teams and was awarded the Fritz Walter Gold Medal in 2019 as the best U17 player in Germany.
The 20-year-old was sorted out early as a youth player at FC Bayern and found his way to Austria to RB Salzburg as a 16-year-old via SpVgg Unterhaching. They paid the club’s record transfer fee of 3.35 million euros. He is still under contract there until the summer of 2024.
At Borussia Dortmund there were signs of another huge upheaval this summer. Under the new sports director Sebastian Kehl, who will replace club legend Michael Zorc in the coming season, BVB wants to try to offer its supporters a completely renewed team.
BVB squad changes face again
In addition to the departures of Erling Haaland, third goalkeeper Roman Bürki, who is moving to the USA, and midfielder Axel Witsel, further changes are expected. National player Julian Brandt would not be put in the way, and those responsible at the club headquarters on Ruhrschnellweg would be more pleased than disillusioned with a change from ex-national player Nico Schulz.
Swiss national defender Manuel Akanji is set to be transferred to the English Premier League and the expiring contract of permanently injured Dan-Axel Zagadou is unlikely to be extended. Even the 2016 Portuguese European champion, Raphael Guerreiro, could leave the club in the summer. He is emblematic of the fickleness of the club, which has oscillated between genius (rarely) and madness (mostly) this season.
Adeyemi, Süle, Schlotterbeck. It shouldn’t stay that way in Dortmund. BVB is looking for another alternative, especially for the storm center. Most recently, the local newspaper “WAZ” linked the former Frankfurt attacker Sébastien Haller to the team coached by Marco Rose. He was particularly convincing this season in the group stage of the Champions League, as BVB had to painfully experience with the two Bundesliga club defeats.
