Controversy with getting abroad: “Political storm in Portugal”
ONE controversy surrounding the Setúbal City Council and the reception of Ukrainian refugees by Russian citizens, allegedly with links to the Kremlin, reached abroad. This Tuesday, the Spanish daily El País dedicates an article to the case that he claims to have caused a “political storm in Portugal”.
“The Police on Tuesday Russian refugees by refugee citizens unleashes in Portugal”, reads the title of the piece, which addresses those carried out by the Judiciary (PJ) in the municipality and appeal by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, to “ a thorough investigation across the country.”
Journalist Tereixa Constenla begins by mentioning that the war in Ukraine “can have effects more than 4,000 kilometers away” and that “for a few weeks” Portugal has been watching “to a political storm over the management of refugee reception in some city councils”.
The main Spanish daily then the “focus of the Spanish central” in Setúbal and recalls that it was receiving reception in the “hands” of the Oriental Emigrants Association (Edinsthinvo), founded by I Khagor, which process, the process thought with the woman crisis, Yuukashina, receives thearchy, on behalf of the municipality.
After referring to the searches carried out by the PJ and describing the alleged links of Igor Khashin to the Kremlin, pointed out by the Portuguese press, El País highlighted that the controversy originated after an interview with the Ukrainian ambassador to Portugal.
The diary underlined that, Despite “Portugal being the furthest European country from Ukraine, since the beginning of the crisis it has received more than 34,000 people, according to data from the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF)”and recalls the warning made by the president of the Association of Ukrainians in Portugal, Pavlo Sadokha, that “these anomalies occur in several Portuguese cities, in addition to Setúbal”.
“The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, requests that the refugee reception network be thoroughly investigated throughout the country to prevent data from falling into the wrong hands”, reads the article, which specifies the various investigations underway. and that shows the position of the Mayor of Setúbal, André Martins, who “blamed the Government for what happened”.
In addition to highlighting the pressure exerted by the opposition on the municipality, the El País says that the matter “triggered the memory of what happened last year at the Lisbon City Council, then chaired by the socialist Fernando Medina, current Minister of Finance in the Government of António Costa”.
From the outside, there is no reference to the position of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) in the face of the invasion.
“The Invasion of the Setúbal refugees also increased pressure on the Portuguese Communist Party, isolated since Russia invaded Ukraine for its position in this conflict”, it reads.
Communist deputies clinging to landmarks from the 1974 Assembly of the Republic, the critical blows of April from their references to Ukraine’s President Volodí. overthrew a 48-year-old dictatorship. The PCP defends itself against the war, but refuses to use the word ‘invasion’ and criticizes Zelensky, whom it accuses of persecuting communists in Ukraine and incorporating neo-Nazi battalions into the army”, they write, recalling the warning by António Costa de that it will not encourage “a climate of witch hunts” in Portugal, disguised as the PCP’s position.
