Sailing: Il Moro di Venezia relives 30 minutes after the triumph in Vuitton – Veneto

Celebrated trophy conquest of challengers in San Diego in 1992

(ANSA) – ROME, MAY 09 – It has been 30 years since Il Moro di Venezia, standard bearer of the Compagnia della Vela, won the Louis Vuitton Cup in San Diego (USA). A success, that of Raul Gardini, born in Ravenna, but in love with the Serenissima, which remains over time. The Compagnia della Vela and Venice celebrated the company with a program full of events: the dances are open with a private dinner in the nautical headquarters of the Compagnia della Vela, which was attended by many of the protagonists of that America’s Cup campaign that consecrated Italy to the world top in sailing. Tommaso Chieffi, head of the crew, recalls that “at the time there were no nationality rules, it was Raul’s precise choice to have a mainly Italian crew”. On the other hand, the skipper, Paul Cayard, who attended the evening in connection from San Francisco, was not Italian.

“I was 29 and Raul was a man who believed a lot in young people. We were in the right place at the right time. Raul had great faith in us and he never made us lack this confidence even when we were down 4-1 against Team New Zealand. . Il Moro is a large part of my heart, of my life “, his words. Next to Raul’s children, Ivan and Eleonora Gardini, guests of honor, the Vuitton Cup. The trophy, which bears the plaques with the names of the winners – including that of Il Moro (1992) and Luna Rossa (2000) – it will remain on display in the Compagnia della Vela headquarters in San Marco until early June. On Saturday the crew boarded Il Moro di Venezia II, one of the 5 hulls manufactured by the Tencara di Montedison shipyard in Marghera, which is still flying the Compagnia della Vela banner, for a parade. The Moro greeted the historic headquarters of the Compagnia della Vela in Piazza San Marco and of Bucintoro in the salt warehouses. (HANDLE).
