Daniil Medvedev and Terre Battue are not known to be love affairs. Strictly speaking, Medvedev doesn’t particularly like playing on grass either, but at some point the Russian will have to get back into the game. This is now to be done in Geneva, we reported. But the question is: what comes next? Will Medvedev also go to war at the second major of the year in Paris?
Things haven’t really gone well there for the current second in the world rankings. Until last year – when Medvedev reached the quarterfinals, where he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas retired. That Tsitsipas, whom he actually has quite well under control on hard court. And with whom he shares a heartfelt dislike. But while the Greek WILL serve as one of the favorites at the Bois de Boulogne, for Daniil Medvedev it’s probably just about collecting a few points for the ATP charts. It’s hard to imagine that Medvedev, with the well-rehearsed professionals like Tsitsipas, Carlo Alcaraz or Alexander Zverev can keep up, from Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal not to mention.
Medvedev, Rublev and Co. not wanted in Wimbledon
Whatever the case: after Roland Garros, things continue on grass – for Medvedev and his Russian compatriots, but only outside of Great Britain. They are not wanted there because of the war of aggression against Ukraine. Which limits the options for Medvedev and Co., but doesn’t turn them to zero. Then, like his friend Andrey Rublev, he played in HalleWestfalen last year (not so successfully), the following week he won his first and so far only title on grass in Mallorca. Maybe Medvedev will also expand his game plan, starting in Stuttgart right after Paris.
In any case, the US Open champion of 2021 can use the two weeks of Wimbledon to invite himself to the hard court season. The Medvedev, and this has been known for a few weeks, will start in Los Cabos from August 1st. Quite a long break. In order to shorten this, Daniil Medvedev could make another short stop on the sand (in Hamburg?) – or serve on grass at the International Tennis Hall of Fame tournament in Newport.
