So long is the wait for Norway’s five best-selling new cars
For several years, many car brands have had long and uncertain delivery times. Not least this applies to new electric cars, where in the worst case it has dealt with waiting times of well over a year, sometimes all the way up this year.
A number of hybrids and fossil models have also suffered from this. It started with the corona and all the problems the pandemic created. Then came the industry’s shortage of so-called semiconductors, or microchips.
Now the situation is worse than worse, after the war in Ukraine has created major problems for the image producers in this country. With factories located in ruins, it is difficult to produce and deliver images.
The most popular
That’s why we are increasingly hearing stories of procrastination – and very long delivery times. This affects both bestsellers and less popular models. Broom has taken a look at how the situation is now for the five most popular models in Norway.
According to the registration statistics from the Road Traffic Information Council (OFV), the following are:
1. Tesla Model Y
2. Audi Q4 e-tron
3. Tesla Model 3
Hyundai Ioniq 5
5. BMW iX
We asked the importers the following questions:
1. How long is the waiting time for your most in-demand model if you order today?
2. What is the possible reason for the long delivery time?
3. When do you expect the waiting time to be shorter again (“normal”)?
4. Do you experience that customers cancel due to long waiting times?
Here is the answer we got:
Delivery problems: Many people now have to wait a long time for their car
Tesla – Model Y and Model 3:
1. – Model Y ordered today has delivery in August 2022.
Model 3 Performance can be delivered in September 2022. Model 3 and Model 3 LongRange have delivered in February 2023.
By the way, Tesla has not answered any of our other questions … Then you have to interpret it as you wish.
Audi – Q4 e-tron:
1. Expected delivery Q4 is now the first quarter of 2023. For e-tron, we have cars in stock, and more in production with a shorter delivery time.
In general, we can say that our customers show patience and understanding in a situation where the entire industry has met these challenges. We are happy about that, at the same time as we work to get as many cars delivered to our customers as quickly as possible.
2. Long delivery times have for some time been a challenge for most car manufacturers, due to several different conditions. Both covid, lack of microchips and not least production challenges of wiring related to the war in Ukraine.
3. We are in daily contact with our factories, and are impressed by the adaptability they have shown by, for example, setting up new, temporary production facilities for wiring. We now see a hint of shorter waiting times than we feared when the war in Ukraine broke out.
4. – We have not experienced this as a trend. Customers are well acquainted with the situation, and we see that our dealers have a good dialogue with customers to find alternative solutions, both related to the order they have made, and to find alternatives while they wait.
Semiconductors have become the big headache
BMW – iX:
1. – We can deliver the BMW iX xDrive40 in July / August this year. For the BMW iX xDrive50 and BMW iX M60, delivery will be the first quarter of 2023.
2. – The reason for the long delivery time on several models is a combination of the very high demand we have had since we opened for order last year, and the many consequences of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. This then includes the supply of semiconductors, a changed logistics picture worldwide, and a changed production pattern at subcontractors.
3. – The unpredictability we now experience will follow us throughout the year. There are still too many unanswered questions to be able to answer when the “normal” is back. What the “new normal” will be also remains to be seen.
4. – We do not experience that customers cancel.
Must stop the production of Norwegian bestsellers
Hyundai – Ioniq 5:
1. – We currently operate with 6 months, slightly depending on equipment and color. By far the best we sell is Premium 4×4.
2. We have had a demanding delivery situation for quite some time. The now situation is still not far from normal, delivery time from the factory in South Korea to the quay in Norway is 55 days.
– We do not believe in major changes in this situation in the short term, also because we have a high sales rate at the moment.
4. – We do not notice much of such trends, but still have consistently good demand for our hybrid models as well.
