Regensburger Domspatzen cooperate with the Salzburg Mozarteum
Regensburg/Salzburg, May 7th, 2022 (KAP/KNA) The Regensburger Domspatzen and the Mozarteum in Salzburg are entering into a longer musical partnership. To start with, there will be a joint concert in the Salzburg Cathedral on May 28 (6:30 p.m.), according to the choir’s management. The Marian Vespers by Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) will be heard, with Jörn Andresen, Professor of Choral Conducting at the Mozarteum, in charge. The same concert will take place in Regensburg the following day.
The participating ensembles sing different parts. The Domspatzen introduce the main parts with Gregorian antiphons, which are sung by Salzburg students and orchestrated by orchestra musicians. This is intended to emphasize the liturgical character of the Marian Vespers, according to the announcement.
Monteverdi’s Vespers of Mary, first performed in 1610, gilded as one of the earliest works of sacred music. The piece for up to ten different voices marks the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque and was a musical sensation. Monteverdi achieved a perfect synthesis of traditional polyphony and new types of concert sounds that had not previously been heard in church.
The composer, plagued by money worries, recites the work of Pope Paul V (1605-1621) and used it to apply for a position in a church office in Rome, but without success. In return, the Marian Vespers earned him a lifelong position at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice three years later.
