Liverpool save a late draw against Tottenham
The Reds go into a temporary draw at the top of the Premier League table.
Liverpool averted the disaster on Saturday when they drew 1-1 with visiting Tottenham Hotspur thanks to a goal in the 74th minute by Luis Diaz.
The Reds are involved in a hotly contested title race with Manchester City and came into the match just one point behind the league leaders, but a loss on Saturday would have opened the door for the Sky Blues to take a four-point lead if they were to win against Newcastle on Sunday .
Instead, Liverpool saved a point at Anflield after losing to Spurs early in the second half. The visitors kept the pressure on to tie the game when, after 56 minutes, Son Heung-min broke through the center and found himself alone with the keeper. Tottenham are in the middle of their own battle to end the season when they look to take on north London rival Arsenal for fourth place, and Son’s goal seemed to put them on course to do just that.
However, the deficit did not dampen the hosts’ ability to attack, and after almost 20 minutes of delay, it was Diaz’s rejected strike from distance that put the match back on equal terms.
The teams exchanged half chances during the rest of the match but none of them could find the nets a second time, which resulted in the points being shared.
Liverpool and Tottenham each have three games left of the Premier League season.
