The joint application by Innsbruck Tourismus and the Stubai Tourist Association for the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships 2023 (WMTRC 2023) prevailed against strong international competition.
The Innsbruck-Stubai applicant community is bringing the WMTRC to Tyrol at the beginning of June 2023 – they were able to prevail against three other strong international applicants. That’s what the committee made up of the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU), the International Trail Running Association (ITRA) and the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA) under the management of the International World Athletics Federation (World Athletics, WA) decided earlier this week in Monaco. The Tyrolean application was able to score points thanks to the professional application documents, the proven event experience and the excellent reputation as a leading alpine sports region. It is expected that up to 1,400 athletes from over 60 nations will start in the heart of the Alps. On four days of competition, the world champions are sought in the categories female, male, junior female and junior male over a total of four distances. The majority of the estimated event budget of around 4.7 million euros will be secured through the joint support of the federal government, the state of Tyrol, the city and tourism associations.
The President of World Athletics, Sebastian Coeis satisfied with the decision: “We are thrilled that the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships 2023 will take place in the Austrian region of Innsbruck-Stubai. This international running festival will gather the elite of trail and mountain runners from around the world, who We are also pleased to be working closely with the World Mountain Running Association, the International Association of Ultrarunners and the International Trail Running Association in running this event at all levels and every form – and this is an exciting opportunity to showcase a different kind of racing challenge for distance runners and to bring them together to celebrate their shared passion for our sport.”
WA, IAU, ITRA and WMRA jointly reviewed all applications for the WMTRC 2023: “The quality of the applications confirms the global growth and interest in the various disciplines of outdoor running, but we are confident that the award of the WMTRC 2023 to Innsbruck -Stubai will lead to very successful championships in 2023.”
Vice Chancellor and Sports Minister Werner Koegler: “A mountain and trail running world championships in Tyrol? Where, if not here – one is inclined to ask. It is very gratifying that the award committee seems to have thought the same way. I congratulate Innsbruck and Stubai on this high-quality application, but above all on winning the bid against strong international competition, and I am already looking forward to ten exciting medal decisions, spectacular pictures from the Tyrolean mountains and a festival on the subject of sustainability.”
Tyrol as the ideal venue
Tyrolean governor Gunther Teller is pleased about the contract won: “Due to our alpine landscape, we are the ideal venue for the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships 2023. And we know how to organize sporting events and major events in Tyrol. The joint staging of the two regions of Innsbruck and Stubai provides the best conditions for a successful and sustainable implementation of the competitions and the supporting program.”
Also Joseph Geissler, Deputy Governor and State Councilor for Sports of Tyrol, welcomes the application: “The hosting of the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships 2023 in Innsbruck and the Stubaital will further strengthen the international reputation and the reputation of Tyrol as a sports country. Trail running is a sport that takes place in harmony with nature and provides images that stand for sustainable outdoor tourism.”
Mayor agrees George Willy to: “Innsbruck can present itself as a “city in the mountains” with this major sporting event. We don’t have to expand or rebuild anything, we show what is there: a city in the heart of Europe, embedded in a unique mountain world.”
“Alexander Pittl has done pioneering work in the field of mountain and trail running for our region. Due to the unique combination of urban charm and nature experience and the excellent organization, the largest trail running event in Austria was able to develop here in just a few years. The awarding of the World Championships to Innsbruck and Stubai is now the crowning glory. Sport that does not burden nature and the environment definitely has a role model function, especially in times of global warming – and will hopefully also encourage many children and young people to do more sport,” says Innsbruck’s sports councilor Elizabeth Mayr. Trail running has now become a trend sport, and so are Mario GerberChairman of Innsbruck Tourismus, and Adrian SillerChairman of TVB Stubai, agreed.
The event is supported organizationally and professionally by Alexander Pittlthe founder of the Innsbruck-based drive instead and initiator of the extremely successful “Innsbruck Alpine Trailrun Festival”, which has developed within a few years into by far the largest such running event in Austria and the third-largest in the DACH area and this weekend will be staged around Innsbruck.
Innsbruck and Stubai offer the best conditions
With its combination of city, i.e. existing hotels and event infrastructure, and its proximity to the mountains, the alpine-urban Innsbruck offers ideal conditions for the expected World Cup. The Stubai Valley is characterized by top holiday hotels and its landscape. Breathtaking routes, such as trails along the “Kalkkögel” to Neustift up to the “Elfer” or routes through Innsbruck’s old town and the legendary “Höll” are being developed for the WMTRC. The exact routes have not yet been fixed.
