Unprecedented surgery using 5G between Portugal and Spain
5G mobile technology has been a reality in Portugal for some time and very interesting projects are starting to appear. As we have already mentioned several times, in addition to increasing the speed of communications, 5G has other characteristics that will make it possible to create new business models, but also to use this technology in smaller environments.
Recently, Altice Portugal and the Champalimaud Foundation carried out an unprecedented surgery using 5G.
900 km between Lisbon and Zaragoza in a surgery using 5G
According to the statement sent by Altice to Pplware, on May 5, history was made through the performance of the first cancer surgery using 5G technology, which united Portugal and Spain.
The Champalimaud Foundation, Altice Portugal and the operator Movistar were the participants in this event that put 5G technology at the service of Health.
900 km are between Lisbon and Zaragoza. This was the distance shortened by the valences of Altice Portugal's 5th mobile generation – speed, lower latency, intelligence and reliability – that made Dr. Pedro Gouveia, renowned surgeon at the Champalimaud Clinical Center Breast Unit, only in direct audiovisual contact and in real time with the Spanish surgeon of the same unit, Roge Andrés-Luna.
The surgical surgery was followed on the stage of the Congress of the Spanish Association of Breast Cancer (AECIMA), which runs until May 7, at the Faculty of Medicine of the Faculty of Zaragoza.
This unprecedented intervention, with a remote resource for a second surgery, takes advantage of augmented reality and 5G, ensured in Portugal by Altice Labs technology (Altice Portugal's innovation and R&D laboratory) and in Spain by Movistar.
In the last five years, Altice Portugal has invested mainly in infrastructure, ensuring fiber optic access in more than six million homes. This optical fiber, combined with the growing coverage of 5G, gives Portugal the connectivity that the innovation map worldwide and contributes to a country with a single speed, agnostic to regional asymmetries and population density.
