More than 300 complaints of abuse in the church in Portugal — DNOTICIAS.PT
The coordinator of the commission created to investigate sexual abuse in the Catholic Church said today an independent version of “testimonies to rise”, reaching out to people today.
“So they continue to complain, if I said now a day to go up, because we know that people continue to-, which is also important, but today is the number of direct statements”, said Pedro Strecht.
Pedro Strecht is the coordinator of the independent commission.
The independent commission coordinator spoke to journalists after a conference at the Catholic University of Viseu, also with commission member and psychiatrist Daniel Sampaio.
This number, explained, is very likely” to be higher, since the psychiatrist said that “it is extremely common” for a person, who contacts to give a testimony, “to mention the existence of more names of people than at the same time, by the same person, in the same place, could have gone through the same”.
“Therefore, number in the abstract that is of accounting but which will certainly be greater now than it will be exact”, as a total number of demonstrations so far of the difficult”, which is a total number of demonstrations until now of the difficult”, which is a number total demonstrations so far exact”, which is an absolute number that will be exact now.
In this sense, psychiatrists are promoting conferences and debates to appeal to testimony, either by phone (917 110 000) or email ([email protected]), contacts that in Daniel Sampaio’s opinion may be more publicized by the Church.
The Church must be more committed, not in relation to the commission, but above all in relation to this cause, because this is a cause of the Church. [mas] I think it should be a national cause.
Daniel Sampaio
In this sense, Daniel considered that, relatively simply, the Church deviated from the “lack of a father of things a final appeal” and made “a very practical way” of passing parents.
“In a situation where there is an assembly to arrive, because the notion that there are many in Portugal where our appeal does not reach and there are masses everywhere and that would be a very important form of commitment of the Catholic Church on this issue”, he defended. .
Thus, he appealed, “a more active diocese in each diocese could be made”, the dissemination of contacts, “in all the publications of the diocese and a direct commitment at mass, in that part of the mass in which announcements are made, there could be an appeal to witness”.
Pedro Strecht also said that “there are people who ask if it is about the Catholic Church” and only the circumstances, or even other areas of society, the commission can “help to guide, since the” idea is not to leave people alone and even if you need another kind of help, refer them in this regard”.
Of the cases, more than 300 testimonies, said Pedro Strecht, 16 went to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, “but to be analyzed, more are being analyzed, and are being to be increased soon sent to the Public Ministry”.
