Festival hesitates when deciding on Currentzis performance
Culture
The Salzburg Festival will open in two and a half months. It is still unclear whether the Greek-Russian conductor Teodor Currentzis WILL be there. Because of the Ukraine war, his MusicAeterna orchestra is being criticized, this is being pursued by a bank that is considered to be close to the Kremlin.
The premiere of the Currentzis opera project “Bluebeard’s Castle” will definitely take place, assures the director of the Salzburg Festival, Markus Hinterhäuser. On the other hand, it is not yet foreseeable whether with or without the conductor, Teodor Currentzis. In any case, the decision should be such that Hinterhäuser can represent it “with all my heart”.
No deadline for Currentzis decision
The premiere of the opera project is to take place on July 26th in the Felsenreitschule. The festival does not give a time horizon by when the decision on the current participation should be made. Changes to the expected program would be announced in any case.
Wiener Konzerthaus canceled benefit concert
Other organizers have already canceled concerts with Currentzis – the Wiener Konzerthaus recently canceled a benefit concert planned for Ukraine with Currentzis. The reason for this was an intervention by the Caribbean ambassador, who asked that Russian artists not be involved in concerts benefiting Ukraine.
