Crater in front of house: increased diameter
timeline
In Teisendorf in Bavaria, a large crater in a residential building continues to cause excitement. The size of the hole next to the residential building has doubled in diameter over the past few days. The house is near an abandoned mine shaft and has since been evacuated.
According to the fire department, the crater now measures more than ten meters in diameter. The area around the affected area was cordoned off for safety reasons, the residents of two houses left their homes and were accommodated in a hotel for the time being.
Car crashed into the crater
Already last week, a parked vehicle got stuck on a concrete sewer shaft by chance. Because the diameter of the crater had increased, the car fell about 80 meters down. According to records from the Mining Museum in the Teisendorf district of Achthal, a house disappeared there 80 years ago. A geologist is currently investigating the scene of the accident. It is still unclear when the affected residents will be able to return to their homes.
Water ingress as a cause of collapse
According to the fire brigade, an old mine shaft that was built almost 100 years ago runs in the immediate vicinity of the garage of one of the two houses. Iron ore was previously mined there. Experts suspect the most likely cause of the crater was water ingress, which could have caused the shaft to collapse.
