a conference with academics from 9 different countries at the University of San Marino
From magazines to television, from blogs to social networks, how have the ways in which identities and gender roles are presented and perceived in communities and societies have developed and changed, and with what consequences? The international conference with which on 10 and 11 May the University of the Republic of San Marino will host the interventions of 30 academics ready to offer analyzes involving influencers, fashion and series revolves around this question, including dynamics of customs and culture. TV. Including insights into figures such as Sophia Loren, Gianni Morandi and Monica Vitti, the initiative will involve scholars from organizations such as La Sapienza di Roma, the City University of London and the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. “Spanning television, cinema, press, social media and more, we will talk about how gender identities are addressed and proposed”, explains teacher Elena D’Amelio, organizer of the initiative together with colleague Luca Gorgolini. “We will discuss male, female, non-binary and LGBTQ + representations, with studies on femininity, masculinity and sexuality. The aim is to allow participants to share new theories and research methods on the topic, ideas and perspectives. In short, we want to stimulate conversation on a theme that is central today from the point of view of the collective and media imaginary “. In fact, there are changes underway that affect individuals and society: “I am thinking, for example, in positive terms, of the new TV series that offer non-mainstream identities, such as ‘Euphoria’, where a transgender actress is present. Or to ‘Sex Education’, where straight teenagers don’t just show up. At the same time, in unfavorable terms, it is necessary to record ‘regressive’ phenomena such as the presence on social networks of resistance against the double surname, for example, or episodes of hate speech against women or LGBTQ + people, in contexts where stereotypes and offenses dominate. Instead of representing progress – concludes the academician – these dynamics coincide with a clear step back “. The initiative is managed by the Department of Human Sciences and the Department of History. Open to the public until all available places are exhausted, it will take place in the lecture hall of the university headquarters of the Ex Tribunal, in via Salita alla Rocca 44, in the historic center of San Marino.
