PR says that in Portugal “there is a place for all opinions”
Porto, May 03, 2022 (Portuguese) –
“Fortunately, Portugal is a free country and there is room for all opinions. We can combine a lot or reconcile a little, there is room for all Portuguese opinions, it is not up to the President of the Republic to be entering the concrete debates that take place in all Portuguese societies”, Marcelo Rebelo de Soberano said.
The President of the Republic was asked, in Porto, about the position of the PCP, which today demanded an “unequivocal positioning of the sovereign bodies” on the criticism that he was targeted by the president of the Association of Ukrainian Refugees (UAPT), who in the Saturday said that he did not understand “Portugal, a democratic country, having a party like the PCP” and decided to the agency that that party is “like the agency is because that party is at war”.
In a statement released today, the PCP defended that the statements against the party have a “clear and intolerable censorship and persecution character that aims at all democrats and that requires an unequivocal position from the organs of sovereignty”.
“The statements of fascist hatred made by an official of an association of refugees by Ukrainians against the existence of the PCP, in line with repeated demonstrations by the ambassador of Ukraine and statements by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine also directed against the PCP, as well as henchmen of the PIDE attacked the anti-fascists, are relevant to the anti-democratic nature of the Kiev government”, the party maintained.
As journalists commented on the PCP’s demand, the presentation by the business association of Porto was promoted by Margem Rebelo de Sousa: “I never comment, as you know, partisan positions, partisan debates, debates between civil institutions and debates, political parties among themselves. They are legitimate, they are part of democratic life, having different points of view and having the confrontation of points of view”.
