NPE says failure in the treatment of Finn Christian Jagge – NRK Norway – Overview of news from different parts of the country
It is almost two years since the funeral of former alpinist, Finn Christian «Finken» Jagge.
In the summer almost a year ago, Jagge was admitted to the gastrosurgeon at Ullevål with abdominal pain. He died shortly after other posts.
Norwegian Patient Injury Compensation (NPE), Jagge believes died as a result of failure in treatment at Ullevål hospital on 8 July 2020.
NPE that the death would most likely have been avoided if the patient had received effective antibiotic treatment within a short time after other posts.
Tom Sørum is a lawyer for Jagge’s wife, Trine-Lise Jagge, and their two children.
– They take it from the fall to be heavy that death stands as unnecessary and could have been avoided. But when the death is first a reality and a fact, they are very happy that it is acknowledged that there is a failure – and that you are entitled to compensation, says Sørum.
The hospital admits mistakes
NRK has been in contact with the head of the clinic at Oslo University Hospital, Morten Tandberg Eriksen, where Jagge was admitted. The hospital admits that antibiotic treatment was started before being sent to the hospital. It shows documents that NRK has gained access to.
– This is a sad case where we turn all stones to look for things we should have done differently, writes Morten Tandberg Eriksen in an e-mail.
He further says that the Norwegian Board of Health has not concluded, but writes that they have sent a preliminary report which is now being reviewed.
– We have until the end of May and expect to have an answer ready in a couple of weeks. FBefore we have completed this, it is not possible to answer the questions NRK asks, he writes further.
Many reacted with shock over the sudden death
The popular alpinist won Olympic gold in slalom in Albertville in 1992, and won seven World Cup slalom races before retiring as an alpinist in 2000. He also won the Champion of Champions in 2011. Many reacted with shock over “Finken’s” sudden death – only 54 years old.
The 54-year-old was fit and healthy, but at the beginning of June 2020 had acute and severe abdominal pain, and was immediately admitted to Oslo University Hospital (OUS), Ullevål ward.
I have to go through several surgeries and several rounds of antibiotic treatment.
On June 26, 2020, he was discharged.
But already five days later he felt unwell and had stomach pains again. I once again had to undergo several surgeries.
During other posts, OUS writes that Jagge’s condition was compatible with blood poisoning, and according to their guidelines, antibiotic treatment should have been started within a while.
NPE says that the antibiotic treatment for other posts does not correspond to good medical practice. Antibiotic treatment was not started until eleven hours after admission.
– We also believe that it was probable that patients had an infectious condition with the same type of bacterium as before, and that it should therefore have been given the same antibiotic combination that had an effect at the first post. This combination of antibiotics was first given over 24 hours later, writes NPE.
Antibiotic treatment was started for dispatch
The family’s lawyer, Tom Sørum, believes that Oslo University Hospital did not answer the question of Jegge’s unexpected death well enough in his first answer to the family.
A notification was therefore sent to the Norwegian Board of Health. Sørum believes, among other things, that the hospital did not enter with sufficient professional breadth.
– When the hospital responded to the first inquiry from NPE, they did not make an analysis of the course of events. The special issues related to antibiotic treatment were not themed, says Sørum.
– This is something that is an obvious burden has been made when a person dies of an infection at the hospital, Sørum says.
How much compensation the family will receive has not yet been calculated.
