Tips for exciting tours in Munich and the surrounding area
The cycling season is getting rolling: this weekend offers the opportunity for an exciting excursion. After a Corona break, a tour is taking place again, which the Munich Forum is organizing together with some partners. “Anyone can ride,” says Klaus Bäumler from the forum. This is the route:
Isarwerk III: The tour started at 2 p.m. at the bathing area at the Wittelsbacher Bridge. One station is the Isarwerk III, which generates electricity for 6,800 households on average every year. “The plant is still in operation, but the concession has expired,” says Bäumler. He is waiting for the water rights process to be carried out quickly.
Braunauer railway bridge: The bridge from 1871 is a technical monument. The Munich Forum would like a footpath and cycle path on the historic part of the bridge. “That would be an optimal link between Untergiesing, the Flaucher and the Theresienwiese,” explains Bäumler.
Peace Oak from 1871: The Peace Oak was planted by 12,000 school children in 1871 to celebrate the end of the Franco-Prussian War.
Monument to Mayor Jakob von Bauer: Mayor Jakob von Bauer founded the Flaucher complex on May 1, 1839. “The Flaucher War in 1839 created the first urban green space in Munich,” says Bäumler. “It is a symbol of urban green.”
Isarphilharmonie at the big Stadtbach: Munich’s new concert hall was opened in October 2021. The Isarphilharmonie offers space for 1900 people and is initially an alternative accommodation during the renovation of the Gasteig cultural center. “Especially if it becomes a permanent facility, we hope that there will be a pedestrian and cycle path across the Mittlerer Ring,” says Bäumler.
Playground at the Flaucher restaurant: This playground was relocated near the restaurant. “He’s been very well received,” says Bäumler.
Auermühlbach culvert: “The death roller must be rebuilt,” demands Bäumler. “The city does not meet its responsibility with only warning signs.” Instead, the danger point must be set up and ecological continuity must also be established.
Floßlände: The wave at the Floßlände is the world’s first river wave for surfing. Surfing has been going on there since 1971.
Isarwerk I: The Isarwerk I run-of-river power station was built by the architect August Blößner between 1905 and 1907. It is the oldest Isar power plant still in operation in Munich and a technical monument.
Hinterbrühler Park: The park was a compensatory condition for the construction of the works canal in 1907. It was designed by the city garden director Jakob Heiler.
Golf course: The golf course on a 14-hectare site at Hinterbrühler Park is controversial. The Munich Forum had demanded that the area be opened to the general public. But the lease with the golf club will be extended until 2034.
Villa garden on the Isarhang: We also stop at the garden of Mayor Wilhelm von Borscht’s villa. The cyclists take a look at the site from Conventzstraße. The namesake Hugo Conventz is the founder of the protection of natural monuments, May 12 marks the 100th anniversary of his death.
Großhesseloher Bridge: The Großhesseloher Bridge is a railway bridge on the Munich-Holzkirchen railway line. The bridge structure was built in 1857. In 1985 there was a new building.
Großhesselohe weir system: The weir system from 1907 has been a technical monument since March 2022. “It’s important to be careful when converting the weir,” says Bäumler. The old weir system needs to be renovated.
