Review: Cornelia Jakobs – “Hold Me Closer”
Ron: I rarely give 10s in my Wiwi jury points, but this one is just so good! Cornelia sings the song but each of us can identify with the lyrics and see herself in her shoes (which she is not wearing). Everything here is perfect – the beautiful touching melody, the really well-written lyrics, Cornelia’s powerful voice and the simple effective staging. Cornelia’s lovely raw voice fits this song so well that every imperfect tone just makes it shine. You can really feel the pain in her voice and it feels so genuine and sincere. She’s just talking to you and telling her story and you just have to love her and hug her. I really wish you the best, gurl.

Deban: The texts here are of particular importance. They tell a personal story about finding the perfect one at the wrong time. A smart view of love lost within the framework of seeking love. Unfortunately, much of this is not stated clearly – and Cornelia’s singing is inconsistent at best. Eurovision fans (most of whom show love for all contributions to the same extent) will not find flaws here. But reality often rolls the dice differently. But with the right adjustments and voice-over, this has the potential to surprise everyone in the grand finale.

Empty: I’m man enough to admit when I’m wrong, and I was wrong. In my Melfest top three video I said that “Hold Me Closer” (although I liked the song very much) would not end up particularly loud if it came to Eurovision. Again, I was very wrong. Cornelia’s performance, charisma and her awesome song won me over at Melfest. After the final, I realized that “Hold Me Closer” had to go to Eurovision. When I recently saw her live on LEP, I got goosebumps – I knew this could win. The song touches me on another level now I really listen to the lyrics and feel the feeling in her voice, I believe in every word that Cornelia says. I would be happy if this won.
Do: 9.5
Robyn: “Hold Me Closer” is a good song but somehow it never gets stuck for me. I want to like it more, because I can see that all the ingredients are there – Cornelia adds a lot of personality to the performance, while the song is dynamic, builds and fills emotional power. But it’s not a song that has become an earworm for me. It just seems to exist when I listen to it – and a good Eurovision song has to be more sticky than that.
Do: 6
Pablo: “Hold Me Closer” feels just right. It feels right that it deserved to be in Eurovision, and it will surely feel right if this takes the crystal microphone. It has the property that it may not be your number one song, but manages to press the right buttons so precisely that you can not help but love it in the end. Robyn meets Adele, Swedish pop at its best. Cornelia’s husky but still youthful voice travels smoothly through the tender and throbbing parts of this song and each part feels extremely satisfying. With this song, Sweden really confirms that they want and will try to get that seventh win.
