University of Coimbra is the most sustainable in Portugal and the 26th in the world
For the third consecutive year, the University of Coimbra (UC) is considered the most sustainable higher education institution in Portugal and the 26th in the world, according to the fourth edition of The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2022, released this Wednesday. fair fair.
With a total score of 94.1 out of 100, the UC was an institution with the best overall performance in Portugal in meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
It was in SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructures – that the University of Coimbra obtained a better classification (9999 100), being considered the fourth best University in the world in fulfilling this objective, which values the role of universities in promoting and offering of industry needs.
The number of university spin-offs created since 2000 (113), the University’s ability to generate new research from industry and commerce (about 55 million euros), the number of of patents relevant to research investigated by the University and the volume of research developed by the institution that proves to be industry, innovation and innovation.
In the 21st edition, the University of Coimbra had already distinguished itself in fulfilling this SDG, ranking 2nd to 13th worldwide.
“It is with greater satisfaction and a sense of responsibility that we see a University of Coimbra being recognized again, as one of the universities in the world with success in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals”, declares the Rector of the University of Coimbra, Amílcar Falcão.
“This distinction, worldwide, for the work developed in promoting the needs of the industry and, also, for the promotion of the needs of the industry, demonstrates the UC’s commitment to achieve a production of knowledge with elevation for the answer, with real contributions to give to the social challenges”, he adds.
In this edition of The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, in which an attempt was made (94.1) higher than the previous year (92.1) also in the fulfillment of SDG 2 – Eradicate Hunger – reaching the 12th position worldwide.
Campaigns to combat food waste, the existence of a social menu (at affordable prices) in canteens, research projects related to sustainable fishing or the voluntary initiative to deliver meals to students in isolation were among the actions evaluated in this indicator.
Also in compliance with SDG16 – Peace, Justice and Effective Institutions – the University of Coimbra achieved a prominent place worldwide (36th position).
For this institution of protection to the protection of management risks and financial protection, the collaboration activates the local government bodies of academic and national freedom and the promotion of training actions for magistrates from Portuguese-speaking countries.
The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings aim to measure the overall success of higher education institutions in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals. In total, The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings counts 18 rankings: an SDG ranking and a global ranking.
For these rankings they are formed as an educational institution, the teaching and management of the institutions collaborate to achieve the SDGs based on the United Nations, constituting themselves as the only global instrument of these.
In the 2022 edition, participants from 1,406 institutions.
