Rwandan genocide suspect extradited from Sweden arrives in Rwanda
Kigali [Rwanda]April 27 (ANI / Xinhua): On Wednesday, Rwanda’s national prosecutor’s office received a Rwandan man who was extradited from Sweden to face charges of genocide in Rwanda, among other places. Jean Paul Micomyiza was arrested by Swedish authorities in November 2020 after an indictment by Rwandan prosecutors.
Micomyiza is accused of genocide, complicity in genocide and crimes against humanity, Rwanda’s national prosecutor’s office said in a press release. Micomyiza was born in the Huye district of southern Rwanda and was a student at the National University of Rwanda during the 1994 genocide.
While Micomyiza was at the university, Micomyiza is said to have been a member of a committee whose mission was to search for and identify civilian Tutsis who were to be killed, thereby playing a major role in the genocide against Tutsis, the statement said. The 50-year-old suspect is said to have lived in Gothenburg for 15 years. More than 1,000 Rwandan genocide suspects are still at large in regional countries and abroad, according to Rwanda’s genocide tracking unit.
This year’s anniversary activities, which began on April 7 across Rwanda, will run until July 4 to mark the 100-day catastrophe, during which more than 1 million people, mainly Tutsis and moderate Hutus, were killed. (ANI / Xinhua)
