The international interdisciplinary competition for students entitled “woodencity”, which is organized jointly by proHolz Austria and proHolz Bayern, is entering the decisive phase: On May 19, the jury at the Technical University of Vienna will award prizes for the best project designs for a building site in the cities of Munich, Berlin and Vienna. The focus is on concrete construction tasks for climate-friendly urban densification with wood. 91 project ideas from five countries were submitted to the competition by students majoring in architecture and civil engineering.
The task for the project teams is to deal with urban densification and to show how buildings can be stacked with wood in order to create added value both from an ecological point of view and for the residents. “Wood is that Building material of the future, especially in cities. If we want to achieve national and international climate protection goals, there is no way around it,” emphasizes Alexander Gumpp, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of proHolz Bayern. “Wood binds carbon sustainably and makes a significant contribution to the decarbonization of cities. In addition, wood is available regionally and constantly grows back in our local forests.”
For the fourth edition of the proHolz Student Trophy, students had the opportunity to submit their project drafts for the three construction tasks in the metropolises of Munich, Berlin and Vienna until the end of March. An international jury, made up of representatives of the respective cities as well as renowned architects and structural engineers from the field of timber construction, will now select the winners in the coming weeks, who will be presented at the ceremony at the Vienna University of Technology on 19 June. May 2022 to be awarded. Prize money totaling EUR 15,000 will be awarded. The award ceremony will take place as a hybrid event and will be streamed live.
Urban building with wood
Numerous qualities and advantages of wood as a building material are becoming increasingly important due to ecological and economic challenges and the ongoing population growth in cities. In addition to its active contribution to protecting the climate and resources, the material scores with its low weight and high strength, the design options and the high degree of prefabrication, which enables short construction times. The selected construction projects in Munich (site of the former radio barracks), Berlin (city district near the former Statistics House) and Vienna (Ottakring, residential complex from 1967-1969) are about affordable living space in existing areas and in interaction with existing buildings to create new.
About the proHolz Student Trophy
The proHolz Student Trophy is an initiative of proHolz Austria, which has been awarded biennially since 2016 and will be implemented for the first time in 2022 in cooperation with proHolz Bavaria and three European metropolises. For the submissions, students of architecture and civil engineering form interdisciplinary teams, which are accompanied by lecturers. For this year’s edition, 91 projects from 29 universities and technical colleges in Germany, Austria, Italy, Russia and Croatia were submitted. The aim of the competition is to get students to deal with modern timber construction in a practical way, to get them enthusiastic about the diverse material and to impart know-how in the use of wood as a building material.
