More public toilets with toilets with litter
timeline
In the city of Salzburg there will soon be more public toilets and they should also be environmentally friendly. Mobile construction site toilets made of wood are planned. The special thing about it is that the faeces do not end up in a chemical broth in the eco-toilets, but in wooden litter.
The mobile eco toilets are primarily intended for places with many visitors where there have not been toilets before. The environmentally friendly requirement boxes for the city of Salzburg are being prepared in the commercial area on the outskirts of Wels (Upper Austria). They are 100 percent organic: They don’t flush them down after going to the toilet, but instead pour out litter.
“Litter prevents unpleasant odors”
This should not lead to an unpleasant smell. “The big factor why it doesn’t smell consists of several parts: liquid and solid material are separated in the barrel. In addition, there is litter that dries out and creates air protection,” says Philipp Wildberger, sales manager at Öklo.
The principle is similar to the litter box
The principle works in a similar way to the litter box or rabbit cage: the litter binds at least until the material and odor are emptied. The containers hold up to 200 trips to the toilet. In future, the mobile toilets in the state capital are to be emptied once a day.
Compost is made from the solution
The full barrels with the material are collected and processed into compost by special disposal companies. This is how people’s solution ends up back in the cycle of nature and without any chemicals.
Eco toilets especially for the summer
The biological toilets are planned especially in the warm season in heavily frequented places where there are no public toilets so far. Locations are Salzach embankments or children’s playgrounds. “We need good and clean toilets and we are now the first city in western Austria to start doing so,” says City Councilor Martina Berthold (Bürgerliste).
Ten eco toilets across the city: starting next week
The litter toilets are not cheap: the city pays a total of 60,000 euros per season. But the magistrate saves on expensive sewer and water connections. The city has selected ten locations for trial operation and is renting the eco-toilets for six months for the time being. The first ecological specimens in the city of Salzburg are to be set up as early as next week.
