Population nine million – oesterreich.ORF.at
According to Statistics Austria, the population rose by 48,105 (or 0.54 percent) from the beginning of the year to the beginning of the month, i.e. from 8,979,894 to 9,027,999. After, as it was said on Tuesday, “evaluation of the registration date of main residences”, the nine million mark should have been exceeded by March 17th. The number in the first quarter of 2022 was slightly higher than in the entire previous year with plus 47,230 people or 0.53 percent.
“Austria’s population already passed the nine million mark in mid-March. The population has grown faster than expected due to the refugee migration from Ukraine,” says Tobias Thomas, Director General of Statistics Austria. Of the nearly 48,000 people mentioned, “a good 40,000” are citizens.
Ukraine war as a major factor
According to preliminary figures, as Statistics Austria emphasizes, a total of 52,803 people with Ukrainian citizenship lived in Austria as of April 1. That corresponds to 83 percent of the total population growth of the last three months.
Of these more than 52,000 people, 37 percent were children and young people, and in the group aged 20 and over the proportion of women was 80 percent. Including children and young people, 69 percent of all Ukrainian nationals in Austria are female. Overall, based on the population, most of them live in Vienna and Lower Austria, the fewest in Tyrol and Salzburg.
Strongest growth in Vienna
With an increase of 1.01 percent, Vienna recorded the highest percentage population growth of all federal states, in Lower Austria and Burgenland it was 0.54 percent, in Upper Austria 0.46 percent and in Vorarlberg 0.40 percent. Significantly below are Styria (0.31), Tyrol and Carinthia (0.29) and Salzburg (0.28 percent).
