RB Salzburg shows champions in Austria – dominance again at Bayern

Red Bull Salzburg have added to their impressive collection of titles and are Austria’s football champions for the 13th time since 2007. Coach Matthias Jaissle’s team sealed the championship with a befitting 5-0 (3-0) win over Austria Vienna. So far, so normal. Because in the neighboring country, too, the tension in the championship race has been gone for years – similar to the situation here in the Bundesliga with serial winner FC Bayern.

Nine championship titles in a row, and a total of twelve championship titles in the past 14 years. Only Sturm Graz (2010/11) and Austria Wien (2012/13) also celebrated the championship during this time. In Austria, too, there is a lot of boredom in the title race.

RB Salzburg miles away from the competition in Austria

Why is it? In Salzburg, the competition is divided by miles. A look at the market values of the respective teams is sufficient for this. The Red Bull kickers have a total market value of 220 million (editor’s note: source: transfermarkt.de), while Rapid Vienna has the second highest budget of almost 40 million euros.

The market value of the Salzburg players is therefore almost exactly five and a half times as high as that of the Rapid players. Or to put it another way: Karim Adeyemi, who has scored 17 goals in the league so far this season and also excelled in the Champions League (3 goals), quickly has the market value of Rapid alone at 35 million euros.

For Red Bull around company founder Dietrich Mateschitz, the task in Austria was clear from the outset when the “soccer project” started in 2005 and SV Austria Salzburg was bought 100 percent by Red Bull GmbH: It was about opening up new markets, permanent ones TV presence, the further establishment of the Red Bull brand in the dynamic, sporty arena. In addition, of course, explained with the maximum possible success.

RB Salzburg: Maximum success is always decisive

With their attractive style of play, the Salzburgers are now also able to set international scent marks and thus put Austria a little more on the footballing map as a footballing country. This season, the 1:7 swatter in the round of 16 second leg at FC Bayern was a dampener, but the 1:1 draw in the first leg alone means that Salzburg can also meet international standards on good days.

A large part of the success is also the close integration of all Red Bulls clubs, which benefit from each other. In addition to Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig, there is also the Austrian second division club FC Liefering, the New York Red Bulls from the MLS and the Brazilian first division club Red Bull Bragantino.

Best example: 18 players alone have moved from Salzburg to Leipzig since 2012. Among them are actors like today’s Bayern professional Dayot Upamecano. There are also seven others who have gone the opposite way. The next player in this row could be Adeyemi – at least if Mateschitz has his way. The lightning-fast attacker also arouses great desire from other clubs such as Borussia Dortmund.

Despite their successes, the great fan love does not suit the Salzburgers: In terms of spectator support, the Salzburgers still cannot come close to the traditional clubs Rapid Wien, Austria Wien and Sturm Graz. But that’s not what matters in Salzburg. Maximum success is the top priority. And this has been the case in Austria for a long time, for the ninth year in a row to be precise. There is no end in sight to this series. Similar to Germany.
