Demonstrations against the burning of the Koran continue
Stockholm: Hundreds of people demonstrated in front of the Riksdag in Stockholm, Sweden, against extremists burning copies of the Holy Qur’an on Saturday afternoon, reported Anadolu Agency.
The demonstration was organized by the party of different colors (shade).
According to media reports, about 500 protesters participated and held banners reading “Stop burning the Holy Quran” and “Stop insulting Muslims”.
It is reported that the atmosphere was heated, as shoes, stones and eggs were thrown through the barriers, while the police used tear gas against the protesters.
The incident of burning a copy of the Holy Qur’an in Sweden aroused widespread condemnation from Arab and Islamic states, along with warnings of the seriousness of the incident that fuels feelings of hostility and division in societies.
On Thursday, April 14, the right-wing extremist group, led by the Danish-Swedish politician Rasmus Paludan, burned a copy of the Holy Koran, in southern Linköping in Sweden, under police protection.
On Sunday, April 17, Rasmus Paludan had planned to burn copies of the Koran in cities. Paludan adjourned his Sunday meeting after local police informed him that they could not guarantee security.
Following the burning of a copy of the Koran, Sweden has in recent days witnessed clashes between police and protesters, during which a number of police officers were injured and several cars were set on fire.
