The proposals of Repubblica Futura on tourism in the historic center
Among the issues emerging in the Communications paragraph of the current session of the Great and General Council there was the age-old question of the deterioration of the former station area, which certainly deserves some consideration. Some initiatives could be carried out at no cost, if only there was the will, such as:
a) the fair space of the flows of tourist vehicles in the city car parks, as envisaged in the resolutions of the State Congress dating back over time;
b) the implementation of the request for arengo accepted by the Great and General Council in the last legislature, which provides for a different structuring of the entrance and exit from the parking lot of the former station so that tourists, once they have left the car or getting off the bus in the parking lot of the former station, for their safety they pass under the arcades of the former station in order to reach the other areas of the historic center of the city;
c) a different structuring of the modalities of use of the train, as recently proposed by Unione Sammarinese Commercianti;
d) the different diversion of tourist flows in periods of greater influx, increasing the receptivity of the Baldasserona car park and providing that from this car park it is possible to either take the train up to the Porta Paese and the former station area, or take the cable car, proposing to tourists to make the outward journey with a vehicle (train) and the return with another vehicle (cable car) or vice versa, at the cost currently foreseen for the round trip of tourists by cable car. Among other things, this could have the advantage of making the organization of the service to and from Fonte dell’Ovo useless, which also generates exaggerated costs for tourists, offering them an interesting novelty and them to spend more time in the historic center.
But above all, we believe that in the two years of the covid-19 pandemic the government has had plenty of time to think about developing projects aimed at revitalizing the areas of the historic center of San Marino capital that are suffering the most, within a project more than 360-degree redevelopment, to give new vitality to that and other areas. Some projects already exist, but never completed, as is, for example, that of the museum of the blue-white train. That project would certainly allow to attract the attention of tourists interested in studying an interesting aspect of the history of our Republic and would allow an important redevelopment of the square of the former station. In addition to thinking about the summer reception points, then being able to guarantee a level welcome throughout the historic center and instead we learn that the lifts leading from parking 9 to the center will be under maintenance for the whole of next season. And just take a tour in some areas to realize the (indecent) conditions of the toilets. Areas of the historic center of San Marino, inscribed by UNESCO on the World Heritage List, are not allowed to die. We must not allow there to be areas of Serie A and Serie B. Instead, we must have the courage and the ability to start far-sighted and all-encompassing redevelopment projects, ranging from the creation of new points of interest, to the correct distribution of tourist flows, to the maintenance of services throughout the center of San Marino, without distinction, to the raising of the level of all kinds of services offered.
