Marius Baer – “Boys Do Cry” (Switzerland Eurovision 2022)
Review: Marius Bear – “Boys Do Cry”
Josh: “Boys Do Cry” by Marius Bear is the cutest, most honest song we have in this year’s competition. His smoky voice is so full of depth and the simple jazz rhythm doesn’t let the listener be distracted by anything else. “Boys cry and they must be allowed to” is a very important message. Although the studio cut doesn’t give me exactly the same feel as some of the other songs, and I’m concerned how many will find that boring just because it’s a slow song, with very thoughtful staging, I think all the elements are there so that Switzerland can experience one of THE moments of Eurovision 2022.
Score: 8.5
Jonathan: It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas. At least for those in the UK who are well acquainted with the emotional songs from John Lewis’ annual Christmas advert. “Boys Do Cry” suits this song genre very well and the soft and tender melody certainly has an emotional pull. Aside from that, the commercial song is usually just there to play in the background of the heartbreaking story about a penguin, monster or man in the Moon. That’s the challenge Switzerland faces at Eurovision – deliver an emotional sucker or fade into the background. Based on the audio alone, it tends toward the latter.
Score: 5
Robyn: Look, I’m all for emotional vulnerability, guys who aren’t afraid to open up. But does it have to be through such an inconspicuous song? “Boys Do Cry” doesn’t stand out enough. It’s more like background music, something that’s playing while something more interesting is happening. The message is good, but the delivery does not work.
Score: 2
Wilhelm: The song of Switzerland is a silent threat. It’s not made for the loud, rowdy crowds of Eurovision pre-parties, nor was it designed for the Spotify algorithm. Instead, it comes straight from the heart, conveying sincerity and tenderness while riding the beautiful waves and reverberations of Marius’ voice. Boys cry – and so do bears. With an intimate staging that showcases the man as much as the voice, this will shock many by climbing the scoreboard.
Score: 7.5
Angus: Low-key ballads can be fantastic. At best, they’re refreshing, intriguing, and a respite amidst the Eurovision madness. Unfortunately, Boys Do Cry isn’t at its best. Sluggish, leaden and completely flat, there is little to grasp here. That’s not to say this is a ballad at its worst… Marius sounds fantastic, the strings and growing production up to the second verse are lovely… but lacks the wow factor.
Score: 4
