So-called re-lettings are currently an average of 35 percent more expensive than in 2012, according to a response from the federal government to a small inquiry by the left-wing faction in the Bundestag.
Tenants paid the most for re-letting in 2021 in Cologne (EUR 12.03 per square metre), Düsseldorf (EUR 11.13) and Münster (EUR 11.05).
The strongest field in the ten-year increase was Bielefeld with more than 49 percent, followed by Dortmund with 47.7 percent and Münster with 42.4 percent.

In the Paderborn, Steinfurt and Gütersloh districts, rents for re-letting have each risen by more than 43 percent in the past ten years.
Compared to the previous year, re-letting rents in 2021 increased by 3.6 percent to EUR 8.14 per square meter.
“Finally, all available instruments for rent regulation must be exhausted,” said North Rhine-Westphalian member of the Bundestag Kathrin Vogler (58, left).
NRW also needs new social housing outside of the metropolitan areas. “In addition to the state government, the federal government also has a duty to finally ensure that people have an adequate supply of good living space.”
