The endangered animal species originally comes from South America. However, animals from other zoos that do not grow up in the wild live in Cologne Zoo.
Mother of the new baby is “Ibera”. The four-legged friend comes from the Kerkrade Zoo and came to Cologne in 2020.
The father will be “Yavi”, originally from Amsterdam.

The behavior of anteaters during pregnancy and after birth is very special. So the mothers carry their young on their backs. If the anteater stands up, the offspring climbs onto the rear part of the bear and clings.
The little one has to be under his mother’s armpits to suckle. This is where the bears’ teats sit.
“The gestation period for giant anteaters is 180 days on average and the birth weight is 1,400 grams,” said a spokeswoman for the Cologne Zoo.
It has not yet been clarified whether the offspring was male or female. The baby anteater should initially grow up undisturbed with its mother and develop a healthy bond.
“We are glad that we can build on our successes with the third birth. The European Endangered Species Program (EEP) for the giant anteater is run by Dortmund Zoo,” the zoo said.
