342 children and young people from the Ukraine attended a school in the province of Salzburg before the holidays. After Easter, 30 to 40 additional students have been announced. 50 new teachers have contacted the teaching management for help.
134 of the Ukrainian girls and pupils attend elementary schools, 107 go to middle schools, 86 to an AHS, eight to a polytechnic school and seven to a BHS. At district level, the city of Salzburg is still at the top with 107 children and young people. They are followed by Flachgau with 73 students, 47 are in Pinzgau, 45 in Pongau, 38 in Lungau and 32 in Tennengau.
Gutschi: “Targeted German Lessons”
The vast majority of students who have to flee the war zone are currently in regular classes. “There are German remedial classes or courses in several places. After the Easter holidays, two additional language support classes will be set up at a selected location in the central area,” informs state councilor Daniela Gutschi.
50 new teachers are ready
“Around 20 Ukrainian or Russian-speaking teachers and other people have already contacted the Education Directorate. Depending on the needs, they can be used in the lessons for the children and young people who have fled,” says Gutschi. A total of almost 30 retired teachers have come forward to provide support in the classes.
School attendance possible at any time
Children and young people from the Ukraine – around 20 to 30 new students are added every week – can “join” at any time. All you need is a registration form and an ID document to start attending school. For about a month, 26-year-old Myroslava Mashkarynets has been the contact person for all those affected in the school system. Be it for students, parents, directors or teachers.
