A figure in the history of Portugal has been lost, says director of D. Maria II
The director of the Teatro Nacional D.Maria II, where Eunice Muñoz debuted, says he lost a figure in the artistic history of Portugal and confesses that an image came to his mind when he learned of the actress’ death.
“I remembered a show I saw at Teatro Aberto in which Eunice gave voice to a scenography column in the center of the stage… and how that image for me was so striking and stuck to the image I have of her: this idea of centrality , of support, of support, of the backbone of what is Portuguese”. Therefore, says Pedro Penim, “today is a very significant and definitive shake-up of this structure”.
Pedro Penim recalled the moment when Eunice ended her career, in the theater where she debuted.
“Eunice debuted on the stage that I now direct, at the Teatro Nacional, on November 28, 1941. 14 years old. And this perfect arc, because that’s how her career was, ends up giving some comfort, knowing that Eunice has returned for one last time to her stage, to her home. She arrives. Because she was in fact that column”.
For the artistic director of the National Theater D. Maria II, Eunice is a figure in the history of Portugal.
“He didn’t even know her. But she was who this mother figure was, she was more than her presence in the theater. She is a figure in the history of Portugal who brings modernity, strength, inventiveness, creativity to her art in such an overwhelming way that .
