Improvement in bird flu in Portugal leads DGAV to reduce prevention measures
The improvement in the epidemiological situation, identified in Portugal at the end of the 2021 situation, included the inclusion of measures to combat the new flu virus.

In view of this favorable evolution, the Directorate-General proposed that of measures to prevent the avian influenza virus, with a review of the general confinement against domestic birds.
“This measure is no longer applicable to the entire continental territory. However, as captive poultry in high-risk establishments, they must remain confined to their accommodation, in order to prevent their contact with healthy birds”alerted the statement.
According to DGAV, in high-risk areas for avian influenza keep up as preventative diseasesincluding the recording of events and separation of animals from different fairs, markets, exhibitions and other audiences.
Since October, circulation and Influenza A virus of the H5N1 subtype have been detected in wild poultry populations in different regions of Europe, affecting several wild and domestic species. On November 30, 2021, the first outbreak of infection by this virus (H5N1 subtype) in domestic birds was confirmed in Portugal. On March 18, an investigation by the Ricardo Jorge National Institute of Health (INSA) Raquel Guiomar told Lusa that Portugal had no record of any case of avian flu in humans and that the outbreaks of infection in animals were under control.
According to data released at that time by the DGAV, Portugal has counted since November 30, 2021, when the first case of domestic poultry in the district of Setúbal was confirmed, 20 outbreaks of bird flu and close to 230,000 animals were slaughtered.
