Ryan Garcia’s best option after the Emmanuel Tagoe victory
Putting Tagoe in his rearview mirror, Garcia has many options for his next fight. So which path does the 23-year-old take?
DAZN is investigating who could be the next in line for the Mexican star.
Gervonta Davis
This is the fight to make of a country miles, and it is not even close.
Garcia and Davis held talks in 2021 about arranging a megafight between two of the most prominent young stars in boxing. But instead, Garcia changed his focus to try to meet Manny Pacquiao. When it went nowhere, Garcia tried to resume talks, but Davis had already booked a match with Mario Barrios.
The timeline works as Garcia fought on Saturday, and “Tank” returns on May 28 against Rolly Romero. A Davis victory and the fact that he talks about leaving Mayweather Promotions after the Romero match makes it even more likely that the long-awaited matchup can happen, which would make boxing fans happy.
Jo Jo Diaz
Diaz and Garcia were set to lock horns in November last year, but the former suffered a broken wrist and had to undergo surgery. Diaz continued to face WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney in early December. Haney won an entertaining decision. Diaz’s stock rose due to his lively performance.
Diaz was an analyst on the DAZN broadcast last Saturday. He revealed that he will return in July against an opponent who has not been announced. But if he gets the victory, he would like to get back the lost opportunity from last year.
“I’m the type of guy who will never avoid or duck for anyone,” Diaz said on the DAZN post-show. “If Ryan Garcia wants to sign the contract and I sign the contract, we can get it started.
“I feel like Ryan Garcia, he does not have the heart to be there with the big dogs.”
If Diaz wins in his return and the Davis fight does not end, a Garcia-Diaz deal sounds good to me.
Vasiliy Lomachenko
Yes, I can already hear the laughter. Then, of course, people will say, “What has Garcia done to deserve a ride against Lomachenko?”
If Garcia does not face Davis and does not want to wait until the autumn to take on Diaz if he wins his next match, why not Lomachenko?
Lomachenko is currently in his native Ukraine and is helping in their war against Russia. But if the war ends soon, Lomachenko will want to fight and would like to be in a tent because he would face the uniform lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. until he bowed down because of the war.
Want a big name on lightweight who is available? Look no further than Garcia.
