Robin Dutt: “Gap to Salzburg? Those are galaxies!”
With Robin Dutt, another German football coach is trying his hand at Austria’s Bundesliga. He raves about the WAC, still sees Salzburg worlds ahead, wants to defeat Rapid and laughs at the “mustard” that public experts give.
Be honest: You were a coach at Leverkusen, Bremen and Bochum, you were a sports director in Stuttgart and you were also involved with the German Football Association. Did you ever expect to work in Lavanttal, at a club like WAC?
Robin Dutt: Why not? I’ve known Austrian football for years and also have a second home near the border with Vorarlberg. Wolfsberg has taken a good path in the past few years, that was a good thing for me. The talks with President Dietmar Riegler were great, we have common goals with new infrastructure, a stadium and in the youth field. We want to become a fixture in Austria, and that’s why I came here. Others vacation in the Lavanttal, I work here.
Why has Austria been such a popular place to work for German football coaches for decades? The list is long, ranging from Coordes to Hrubesch, Frank, Matthäus, Löw, Daum, Schmidt, Jaissle, Foda etc.
