State Secretary Raščan announced Slovenia’s humanitarian contribution to the crisis in central Sahel
Today, State Secretary Stanislav Raščan attended a virtual high-level meeting on food and nutrition crises in the Sahel and Lake Chad regions. He announced a Slovenian humanitarian contribution worth 50,000 euros in 2022, which will be directed to the most urgent needs in central Sahel through the World Food Program (WFP).
The event, hosted by the European Commission in co-operation with the Global Network Against Food Crisis and the Sahel and West African Club, aimed to highlight the deteriorating humanitarian and food security situation in the region. Donor countries have been invited to publish promises of humanitarian contributions.
In his address at the meeting, State Secretary Raščan expressed concern over the growing humanitarian needs due to armed conflict, climate change, the global health crisis and rising food prices. However, violations of international humanitarian law and humanitarian principles continue to occur, so dr. Raščan called for ensuring humanitarian access and security for humanitarian workers. He emphasized that the international community must focus its assistance on education, economic empowerment, health care and the rights of women and girls if the region is to enjoy stability in the long term.
As a member of the International Coalition for the Sahel, Slovenia is actively committed to ensuring security in the region and addressing humanitarian needs. Slovenia’s humanitarian contribution will help provide emergency food aid in the central Sahel.
