Villarreal wins! Bayern make a mistake like in Salzburg – football
Bayern Munich slips in Villarreal. The big favorite loses the quarter-final first leg of the Champions League in Spain 0-1.
Surprise in the king’s league! Villarreal shakes title co-favorite FC Bayern. The seventh in the Spanish championship beats the German series champions 1-0 in the first leg of the quarter-finals on Wednesday evening.
The victory is deserved. The home side leave great chances of a higher success.
But: The Spaniards have been warned. Salzburg also brought Bayern to the brink of defeat at home in the round of 16, only conceding the 1-1 equalizer in injury time. As is well known, a 2:7 removal was set in the second leg. Next week Villarreal will have to assert themselves in the Allianz Arena.
Villarreal started furiously
The hosts are the big underdogs, but they don’t act like it. After the 3-0 win in the round of 16 second leg against Juve, they go into the game with confidence and prepare Munich for big problems from the start.
The bell rings in the eighth minute! Villarreal combines fantastically over several stations through the Bayern back team. The guests seem almost surprised by the opponent’s willingness to play. Dutchman Arnaut Danjuma completed the 1-0.
In the 42nd minute, the Estadio de la Ceramica is briefly upside down. Francis Coquelin rips off a cross. The ball lands directly in the goal – star goalie Manuel Neuer is surprised. The video referee BECOMES a spoilsport, recognizes an offside position in the making.
Homeowners stay on the trigger
Also in the second half Villarreal is closer to the next goal. Tottenham loanee Giovanni Lo Celso hits the bar with a long shot.
Then Neuer brings another uncertainty. Or rather: a gross blunder. In the usual manner, he runs far out of his goal and plays along. But: He suits opponent Gerard Moreno. The Spaniard pulls straight from the center line. The ball jumps just past the empty goal.
Villarreal only has to blame the random chance evaluation. But the defensive performance is great. The Bundesliga leader does not come into its own in the first leg.
