Sweden bounces back to a complete day with two wins
The Olympic champions Sweden beat Finland 7-2 in just six finishes during session eight of LGT World Men’s, when they continued their comeback from a day with two losses on Sunday.
Other winners in this session were Scotland, who beat Germany 6-4; Switzerland – 9-5 winners over the Czech Republic; and the USA, who beat Norway 10-8.
The Swedes broke the first end of their match against Finland and then, in the second end, their ship Niklas Edin played a hit to open the score with three points. In the fifth end, Edin played another one for four points, to take a 7-1 lead. Finland scored a point with a snap in the sixth end and then let in the score 7-2.
This gave Sweden its second victory of the day and led them to a shared second place together with four other teams. Afterwards, Edin said, “The good thing is that the ice is much better now and much more consistent. If it stays this way, you will see 90 percent from us. Our form is good. We had a good start there and it helps. I think we can now continue to do what we did at the Olympics, and it worked well.
Switzerland v Czech Republic
Switzerland met the Czech Republic and the Swiss opened with four points in the first end when their skipper Yannick Schwaller had a draw. The Czech Republic struggled to get back into the game after this and in the sixth end, with Switzerland leading 7-1, their jumper Lukas Klima hit a hit on a Swiss rock and scored two points, reducing Switzerland’s lead to 7-3. Switzerland continued to win 9-5 after eight finishes, to join the pile in second place.
After this win, Swiss Schwaller said: “It feels like we’ve finally got a rhythm. Everything was under control. We felt the ice, we could trust where the broom is, and that means a lot. But I hope we can still be better from here. “
Norway against the USA
Norway played against the USA and in the third end, with the USA ahead with 2-0, Norway’s ship Magnus Ramsfjell pulled his last stone into the house to score two points and level the match. After this, the United States scored three points in both the sixth and eighth finals when they went out as 10-8 winners.
Scotland v Germany
Scotland met Germany in this session and in the third end, with Germany already leading 2-0, Scotland’s fourth player Ross Paterson played a hit and scored a point that reduced Germany’s lead to 2-1.
In the eighth end, Germany still led 3-2, but their skipping Sixten Totzek did not move a Scottish stone enough with his last effort to give Scotland a steal of one that equalized the score to 3-3. The Scots then went on to win 6-4 with a steal of three points in the tenth end, when Totzek’s last stone broke on the way in. His result means that both Germany and Scotland agree with the five-man decision in second place.
Results of session eight: Finland 2-7 Sweden; Norway 8-10 USA; Switzerland 9-5 Czech Republic; Scotland 6-4 Germany
