Salzburg takes the lead against Fehérvár in the ICEHL final
History was written twice on Tuesday in the Salzburg Volksgarten: On the other hand, it was the longest game in a series of finals.
Although Salzburg set the tone from the start, the first playoff game in the final series between Salzburg and Fehérvár remained exciting until the end. The 1:0 in the 8th minute by Brian Lebler was followed a few minutes later by Csanád Erdély, only after surviving a power play. The Hungarian made himself a present, he celebrated his 26th birthday yesterday. But it shouldn’t be enough for the right party. More than two hours later, Salzburg cheered.
Because in the regular season it remained at 1:1. After 10 minutes of extra time, the disc was finally in the Salzburg goal. But because János Hári and the goalkeeper slipped into the goal, the referee team waved it off. There was a lot of cheering in the hall, but it was allowed to get even bigger later – even if patience was needed. Because for the first time a final goes into the second overtime. Then it was 85 minutes that the players struggled on this Tuesday evening. It should be worth it for Salzburg: Leonhardt’s shot made it 2-1 for Salzburg. Now it’s time to regenerate quickly from the exertion. Game number two in Hungary follows on Thursday.
The second final game follows on Thursday in Hungary.
Salzburg had started the series as the clear favourites. After all, the Bulls finished the regular season in first place and did not concede a defeat in the first two play-off rounds against Znojmo and the Vienna Capitals. On top of that, Salzburg won three of the four duels with Fehervar and also won the only play-off duel in the quarter-finals in 2019 4-2.
