Angel Dzhambazki: Bulgarian MEP sanctioned for receiving Nazi salute in parliament
A Bulgarian nationalist MEP was sanctioned for giving an apparent Nazi salute in the European Parliament in February.
Angel Dzhambazki will have his daily allowance suspended for six days, the equivalent of €2,028.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced the fine during the opening plenary session in Strasbourg on Tuesday.
“I have decided to impose a sanction on Angel Dzhambazki for his inappropriate behavior on February 16, 2022, when he extended his right arm in what was perceived as a Nazi salute as he left the room,” said Metsola said.
“It harmed the dignity and reputation of the European Parliament,” she continued.
The Bulgarian MEP was notified of the sanction and given the opportunity to appeal, Metsola added.
Amid outrage over the apparent move, Dzhambazki had denied the allegations and said it was an “innocent wave”.
“I apologize if my innocent wave (which was actually an apology) insulted anyone,” he said.
Video footage showed him walking up the steps of parliament after speaking during a debate before turning around and holding his right arm out in front of him with his hand flat seconds before leaving.
The debate focused on the rule of law and the European Commission’s decision to cut funds for countries that do not respect EU values and principles.
Dzhambazki had criticized the decision and accused the bloc of trying to “shame” Hungary and Poland.
The rules of procedure of the European Parliament stipulate that MEPs “refrain from any inappropriate behaviour” and “any offensive remarks”.
